Given the right environment - a very precisely controlled environment - high-purity tin chooses to grow in these long needle-like filaments. This spiky result is somewhat unexpected given how soft tin is but, of course, at the atomic level there is no such thing as softness.
For now at least these crystals are in very limited supply. It takes about a continuous month of growth for the tendrils to reach their apparent maximum length of about 50mm.
