This specially prepared ampule has been made by creating a partial vacuum with the addition of a very small iodine crystal. The crystal evaporates a few billion atoms inside to create a wispy thin “atmosphere” of pure iodine gas. Like other low-pressure gases, iodine too ionizes in a signature color which in this case is a complex palette of creamy yellows and purple-blue highlights for a mesmerizing visual effect.
