Neodymium magnets have made this otherwise obscure element popular and these are found in many devices today. Even though the name might make it sound that the magnets are neodymium they're really only a minor component in otherwise ordinary iron magnets but the Nd is the secret sauce that turns it into a much stronger magnet.

Pure neodymium is a delicate metal that goes from shiny to tarnished in minutes and left out in air it will completely corrode in a matter of days into a pile of powdery dust. For this reason keeping it shiny requires encapsulation in glass with argon gas.
