Lanthanum gives its name to a whole row on the period table, the lanthanides. Apart from this the little-known element is famous for little else. The metal is soft and rapidly corrodes if left out in the open.

The specimen provided here was carefully prepared in an all-glass enclosure with argon to keep it pure and bright.
