Fighter jets, replacement hips and melted-candy buildings would seem to have nothing in common but titanium gets the credit for making them possible. With its relatively low weight but very high strength and resistance to corrosion titanium is an ideal structural metal. The only reason you don’t see more of it is because it’s much more expensive than steel both in the raw material costs as well as the difficulty of its machining. Still, this is a market worth $5 billion dollars annually and growth is expected to double in the next ten years so do expect to see more and more of it.
