Based on cost alone scandium could compete as a precious metal, easily besting silver and at times rivaling ruthenium and even platinum. While not terribly rare, scandium’s mining problem is that it’s never concentrated in deposits and ore veins the way other metals are and is, instead, recovered as mere impurities from the refining of other ores. The amount is truly puny. The monthly worldwide production of scandium has never been higher than a single ton or so - over a hundred times less than gold!

Scandium is a beautiful brassy hue. Combining the three key properties of high strength, lightness and resistance to oxidation, scandium would make an ideal building material if it wasn’t so expensive.
