Purple Gold

from $15.00

What sorcery is this, a purple metal? It takes a lot for us to carry something that isn’t a pure element since this goes contrary to our mission but we’re making an exception our customers are likely to forgive. When chemistry turns the geek factor dial to 10 they wind up with unholy concoctions like this. In nature gold is famous for alloying with basically absolutely nothing. Inertness is that property characteristic of noble metals and gases alike that shun the company of other elements which is the reason gold does not oxidize even in the most adverse conditions.

Well, unless someone decides to mix it with aluminum, that is. A physicist once theorized that a synthetic ratio of the two metals should yield an unnatural hue of purple and eventually a chemist set out to find out whether it was true. It was. This vivid color is not some Photoshop trick and while it may look like a colored candy wrapper each small brittle piece cleaves to show an equally purple interior that is unique in the whole of metallurgy.

If it wasn’t for this brittleness the jewelry industry would have long ago pounced on this beautiful creation to add alongside the more trite gold alloy variants of “white” and “pink” and so on. But that’s ok. The fact that you can’t find purple gold rings and pendants and whatnot in every mall makes this all the more special.
