Erbium is another illustrious member of the Rare Earth Gang. The exceedingly difficult task of separating it from the other rare earths is what makes it rare and expensive. The very few uses that have been found for this metal rest solely in its oxides or alloys. No sculptor has ever set chisel to a block of pure erbium nor jeweler received a commission to make art out of it either. Unless the world someday is host to an eccentric billionaire geek who would like a limited edition all-erbium sports car it's very doubtful anyone will ever make use of this metal either.
