Neodymium magnets have made this otherwise obscure element popular and these are found in many devices today. Even though the name might make it sound that the magnets are neodymium they're really only a minor component in otherwise ordinary iron magnets but the Nd is the secret sauce that turns it into a much stronger magnet.

Pure neodymium is a delicate metal that goes from shiny to tarnished in minutes. Leave a piece in open air and a day or two later come back to find it turned into a neat little pile of dust. The one gram sample here won't be doing anything other than go tink tink tink when you shake it around. That's thanks to the ampule sealed inside having been filled with argon gas which prevents any oxidation from taking place.
