Since the late 90s a lab in Dubna, Russia, and staffed by a team of Russian and American physicists, have dedicated themselves to coming up with as many new transuranic elements as possible. In 2003 they confirmed the presence of this moscovium from the signature of the decay chain of the atom as had been theoretically predicted. Under the arrangements  between the two countries, naming rights would be given in alternating succession. From the name selected it's not too difficult to guess which side had the honors on this round!
