Fermium is the only element to have been discovered by rummaging through the leftover fallout of an atomic explosion. Only the merest trace - we're talking trillionths of a gram - were found but it was enough material to confirm the discovery. Since that time a few more trillionths of grams of fermium have been produced in nuclear laboratories for study.

Since a picogram's worth of anything is probably impossible to photograph without an electron microscope we'll make do with an image of Fermium's namesake honoree and Nobel laureate, Enrico Fermi.
