Zinc is one of those metals whose mining output is measured in the millions of tons, making it very cheap. However, it’s not a terribly useful metal because it’s both brittle and chemically reactive. Although its primary use is as a protective coating for steel (that’s what ‘galvanizing’ means) and doesn’t oxidize very easily under ambient conditions most other chemicals, such as the tiny amounts of acids and oils imparted during handling, will wreck zinc into an ugly corroded mess.
