This light yellow, soft metal has very few uses currently. One notable exception which makes extensive use of ytterbium are in the making of high-intensity lasers for engraving metal parts. These being small parts, however, means that a consequently small supply is able to satisfy demand. According to one estimate just 50 tons of ytterbium are produced annually as a result.
