Along with nickel, molybdenum is an absolutely crucial metal in the making of steel. It gives iron higher strength, hardness and resistance to corrosion with the only downside being a bit costlier and possessing a higher density. Unlike nickel, however, molybdenum mining yields lower environmental pollution with the metal itself having very low toxicity profile. No wonder then that refineries pumping out giant billets of molybdenum have little trouble in locating clients ready to pay the asking price.

In addition to its central role in steel production, molybdenum compounds are often quite colorful so sizeable amounts of the metal make their way into a variety of pigments and paints. Molybdenum disulfide is an effective dry lubricant and this rounds out its third major use.

All in all, molybdenum has a very high profile in industrial settings even if it isn’t exactly familiar to the average person on the street.
