Tesla and the rapid growth of wind farms the world over are placing great strains on the availability of dysprosium; a metal that is mined and refined almost exclusively within China as a key component of high end electrical motors. At just 1% of the recovered metals from these rare earth ores the paltry yield leaves dysprosium being quite expensive when all is said and done. A kilogram can easily cost over a thousand dollars (surpassing silver at the time of this writing) and the trend is pointing steadily upwards in step with the growth in all things green tech.
