Though this metal has relatively few uses - and is hardly a household word - that hasn’t dampened its demand in the marketplace. The need for rare earth metals as a whole has exploded over the last couple of decades as the unique properties of these metals have been put to use in electronics; an industry segment that thanks to cellphones and the ever increasing computerization of of everyday life means the mines are kept operating 24/7.

Samarium tarnishes in air easily turning nearly black but the metal is considered stable as it doesn’t fully corrode in air like some of the other rare earth metals do. When highly purified, the metal solidifies from its molten state into long woodsy tendrils that are visually quite attractive. A gram or two are sealed under argon gas which is then cast into Lucite acrylic for the final product.
