Mysterious boron comes in two allotropes; a brown powder that looks rather identical to something you'd scrape off your shoe and a glassy type that looks like miniature asteroids.

Despite being common, boron has a reputation for being fiendishly difficult to isolate into elemental form. The recipe how-to’s available to a laboratory setting out to prepare some crystalline boron are scary enough to make lesser technicians call in sick for a week. The process begins by dissolving raw ores like borax in a number of acids then washed and jumbled about with other exotic shtuff in increasing cycles of purity. After a frustratingly long number of steps you’re finally rewarded with a family of compounds called diboranes. These have the unique property of turning into these little black gems after heating on tungsten or tantalum wires. So now that you know what some poor sap had to go through to make it why not own your own little shiny bits of ultra pure boron and show it off to your friends and family?

50 millimeter cube made of Lucite with a perfect fit for our large display case.
