That’s really not too far from the truth (though in vastly more cases it’s earmarked for nuclear power production) but the term itself is informal and refers to more than one chemical.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003eRegardless of which specific substance we’re talking about, yellowcake always refers to a byproduct of uranium ore refining. As it comes out of the ground, uranium ore looks, and almost entirely actually is, just like any other ordinary looking rock but with a minor component of radioactive trace elements. To get to the good stuff, as a first step this rock is usually liquefied with acid. With uranium’s density being much higher than any of the other mineral components, this makes it easy to simply divert the topmost layers to the garbage heap out back and collect the heavy sludge at the bottom.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003eThis heavy sludge is now of course much higher in uranium content but still has many impurities. To get rid of them, the refinery will usually add solutions containing ammonia which yields a yellowish residue from whence the term comes. This yellowcake is primarily ammonium diuranate with chemical formula \u003cspan\u003e(NH\u003c\/span\u003e4\u003cspan\u003e)\u003c\/span\u003e2\u003cspan\u003eU\u003c\/span\u003e2\u003cspan\u003eO\u003c\/span\u003e7 and this is usually the last step that the guys at the mine facilities will perform before packing it and sending it off to, hopefully, a properly accredited nuclear agency. They in turn will undertake the more arduous processing steps to get to the eventually tiny percentage of uranium-235, the fissionable isotope, that they need for running their reactors.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\" data-rte-preserve-empty=\"true\"\u003eClearly, there’s little expectation of seeing yellowcake for sale on Amazon. And, really, if you think about it, that’s a good thing considering it has very few legitimate uses for individuals. The only valid exception, in fact, would probably be for those shopping for unusual scientific collectibles. One of the most asked-for emails that have been cluttering the Luciteria inbox has been a variant of “Can you guys make like a box with sealed gas?” And now it’s finally a reality.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhile we’ve had gas ampules on offer for years these are a poor choice for the collectors who are putting together a set of pure elements in cubic centimeter format. The cheap and easy way often suggested - Hey! great idea why don’t you fill up one of your little plastic boxes with ____ gas? - is not really workable. Just as a helium balloon goes flat after a few hours your plastic box would soon be replaced with air and there goes your investment. Yes, you can glue the lid shut but these are very small, fast-moving atoms that will happily tunnel out of even impossibly small cracks and pores - right through the glue, in fact.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWe knew the only effective option had to be glass. But glass makers, the type that provide glassware for laboratories anyway, do not make convenient little 10mm glass boxes. Sure would be nice if they did but unless we were willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a custom size we had to improvise. And the result is…. actually pretty nice! We’re not actually sure how it was done but we suspect the solution involves taking off-the-shelf borosilicate glass test tubes which are heated to the point of being pliable then quickly stuffed into a square hole. The cube is then back-filled with the target gas exactly the same way as the ampules.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe result isn’t perfect as this un-retouched photo and linked video clip shows: the glass walls are not perfectly straight and the top has a nipple that is not flush with the other sides. But this is nitpicking. They’re quite attractive little pieces that fit perfectly in our 14mm case. The 2mm-thick glass walls provide strength to spare so that if they should accidentally fall there’s a good chance they won’t break. Look high, look low and nowhere can a person buy a gram or two of this “common” metal. Is it because it’s radioactive? Well, yes and no. Thorium is so weakly radioactive that carrying a lump with you poses about as much of a threat to human health as getting an X-ray every other year. You’d have to stand next to a piece of thorium the size of a building before radioactivity levels would become a concern.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"\u003eBut a perfect storm of qualities combines to doom this metal into obscurity. First is the unfortunately fact that thorium has few uses for which other metals aren’t suitable. It is expensive to isolate. It is reactive chemically, gaining a patina over time on exposure to air. And, oh yeah, it is radioactive. However weak its energy output may be that certainly doesn’t help it gain acceptance commercially.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"\u003eA century ago one could buy lanterns which had metallic filaments coated with thorium dioxide, which when heated gives off a light bright enough to rival an incandescent bulb. But then came along widespread adoption of electricity leaving this one singular use orphaned. A specific type of welding uses rods that have a small amount of thorium alloyed in to control electrical arcing; a pretty obscure use that also happens to be in decline as newer formulations replace even this meager demand.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"\u003eThat necessarily leaves the element collector looking to fill the 90th hole in the set a supreme challenge unless he or she is willing to settle for a thoriated rod or a teensy, corroded piece of foil. Beyond those options there really is absolutely no commercial source for this metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"\" style=\"white-space:pre-wrap;\"\u003eUnderstandably, we are very happy to have located a little of this precious resource. Like our protactinium samples, the thorium was laboriously extracted from uraninite and then painstakingly purified over many steps to achieve a small quantity of the pure metal. As it was refined chemically out of the retorts and test tubes came not neat shiny metal bars but metallic powder. Selling a few hundred grams to a little cutesy company selling educational products?
