The universe itself could be a synonym for hydrogen considering it alone represents over 90% of all matter. Yet here on earth the gas is extremely rare except where it's chemically bound to something else (like, of course, water). That is because hydrogen is so light that it floats up into the upper atmosphere and beyond to outer space.
