Calcium Metal Cube 99.5%

from 99.00

Calcium is a very unusual metal to be formed into density cubes – or anything at all for that matter. In fact, to our knowledge these cubes are the first time pure calcium has been made into a commercial product.

There are several good reasons for this. Calcium is not stable in air and will oxidize into a powdery mess if left out. In a previous writeup we had penned that the metal is too soft to be useful. That's not entirely correct. It's not particularly soft, it just has poor structural integrity. Apply physical stress to a piece of calcium and it quickly crumbles. That's not softness per se, it's just poor cohesion. In any case, that's definitely not a trait you look for in a metal.

Calcium, like most other metals, is a colorless shade of gray. These cubes are very nearly pitch black from oxidation that occurs at the point of manufacture with heated tool tips instantly charring the surface as it slices through the metal. We think they look absolutely beautiful as they are. Although they can be safely handled (and fulfill their use as a density reference) to keep them looking this attractive they should be stored under mineral oil immediately afterwards. Each 10mm cube weighs an astonishingly light 1.59±0.02 grams which is comparable to a wad of paper of the same size... almost insubstantial, yet a piece of real metal!

They ship oiled and vacuum packed. Larger sizes available as custom orders.
