Silicon 50mm Lucite Cube

Due to its ubiquity in the semiconductor industry (not to mention the universe), the element silicon is easily available. The chips in your phone and your computer are very pure silicon that has been etched with microscopic tracks along which run electrons as though runners on a course. However, the chips as people are used to seeing them - they kind of look like many-footed insects - have plastic covers and aluminum connectors. Stripped bare, the silicon chips look like fragile, opaque glass rectangles and these in turn were cut cookie-cutter style from much larger wafers.

Here we have a small wafer that was cut not for eventual use as a chip but rather as a laser mirror. It has a stunningly beautiful finish that reflects light much darker but just as sharply as a regular mirror does. The disc was then bathed in acrylic resin and baked until it hardened. Finally, the sides were cut and polished and a label stenciled on to finish this beautiful specimen. One of a kind!
