If you want the gold piece in your collection to call more attention unto itself than gold already does you really can't do any better than going with a genuine ancient coin. In this Byzantine solidus dating to the early years of the 7th century we see the portrait of mean old bastard Phocas. A low ranking soldier, he came to power unexpectedly when he mutinied after being denied some due vacation. He and a group of other malcontents stormed the gates of Constantinople and found the lightly guarded palace no match for their veteran swords. The hapless emperor was dragged out and forced to watch his entire family slaughtered one by one before he too lost his head. And this rotten start set the tone for his eight year reign of terror which ended, in a touch of poetic justice, when another rebel seized Constantinople. The crowds cheered as Phocas bit the dirt and the executioner did his thing.

Well, not a Pulitzer-prize winning bio to be sure but that's about the gist of it!

Weight of coin is 4.4 grams. Coin design is same as this one
