If in the mind of the public a metal can be associated with a place then there's probably no better known pair than gold and Alaska. After the 19th century California gold rush depleted the richest alluvial deposits of that state fortune seekers didn't have to stay idle for long. Word had spread like fire that far to the north riverbeds were coughing up limitless amounts of gold.

The second gold rush was on as tens of thousands of people, most with no knowledge of mining and even less of surviving terrain as wild and unknown back then as the dark side of the moon, threw caution to the wind and set off to find their riches. Most came back empty-handed without seeing so much as a pea-sized golden nugget but by then Alaska had become firmly embedded in the world's psyche as a particularly "goldiferous" corner of the planet.

Gold-panning in Alaska and Canada's Yukon continues to this day on a much smaller scale. We think we pay homage to this, man's most beloved metal, by encapsulating a little of that state's legendary fruit in acrylic. These naturally pure gold nuggets, each weighing between two and three grams, were bought locally from panners working claims near Skagway, AK which formed the heart of the Klondike gold rush and, as such, provide a little more authenticity to the story :-)
