In the last few years gallium has become the plaything of nerds of all ages thanks to increased availability via novelty shops and YouTube videos. Its lack of toxicity and relative low cost help things further, turning it into a safe alternative to mercury, which has been all but banned. A fascinating characteristic of gallium, apart from its body temperature melting point, is that when it solidifies it expands like ice does so storage usually means a flexible container. This poses a challenge for this sort of project where you need maximum visibility. As we can expect, indeed want, the sample to melt and solidify over and over (because that's the fun of having gallium!) maximum visibility is a must. A glass wall would be inadvisable since the sample will crack upon expansion. We've overcome this problem by treating the ampule with a liquid coating that resists the normal glass-wetting action of gallium as well prevent the expansion that would over-pressurize the ampule. The coating does cloud the ampule some but gives us the best of both worlds as it allows for repeated thawing of the sample within without worry of glass shattering.
