Polishing is the process by which you flatten a material to the point where it becomes smooth. If you can get it smooth enough light will reflect off its surfaces rather than be absorbed by the material. Metals are particularly well suited for this purpose because of their ductility or how elastic they are. Metalloids however are defined by having some properties that are metallic but some that aren't. And they're never ductile.

So it was as a technical challenge that we endeavored to bring sheen to this notoriously brittle element. One way to accomplish this is simply to melt it onto a very flat surface like glass. Another would be to polish with conventional methods using extreme care so as to not cause the fractures that would see the surface or even the bulk of the material compromised.

Here we started by pouring molten antimony into a a square mold and then hand polished it with increasingly finer grit sandpaper over the course of an hour or two at which time we arrived at if not a perfect mirror then at least one that comes pretty close! By all measures a unique presentation piece.
