Aluminum 50mm Lucite Cube

This humble metal used to be so difficult to refine that it was used as jewelry back in the 19th century until the Heroult process made it, well, dirt cheap! Today aluminum is second only to iron in industrial use and might even upstage the leader if it were only cheaper to make. And that day might come as the cost of electricity drops with new energy technology.

Due to the metal's lackluster strength in pure form, nearly all aluminum today is intentionally alloyed with other metals to give it better properties. We have gone up the supply chain to get the purest commercially available grade: 99.996%. In this curiously specific purity, aluminum would be a poor choice to turn into a bicycle frame or practically anything else as it is quite soft and less resistant to corrosion but for someone who wants to appreciate the visual appeal of the element it suits our needs perfectly.

This tightly bunched grouping is made from aluminum pellets that have been machine cut at the factory from a long rod. Their beautiful luster is forever preserved behind thick acrylic that will never yellow or become hazy. Each block measures 50mm to a side, or 1-15/16ths of an inch.
