Lutetium Metal in 25mm Acrylic Box

from 10.00

Lutetium is the most expensive element in the rare earths series. This is in part due to its rarity. A hundred pounds of monazite, its chief ore, are needed to get the piddly 2 grams of Lu in this ampule. But more than that it's the sheer difficulty of extricating it from its rare earth buddies with whom it's always found. And of all the REs lutetium is the most difficult to separate with there being literally hundreds of steps to get from the raw ore to the finished metal at a purity of 99.95%. A little of this metal is attractively displayed in this labeled cube measuring one inch per side and filled with an inert gel ensuring the sample remains free of oxidation. When tipped on a side the lutetium inside will shift into a new position over the course of several hours. So turn it, turn it often just for the fun of it :-)
